The Ephrata Cloister is one of the premiere sites of its kind in the United States.  The Cloister was a deeply religious, communal society that flourished mid-1700s under the leadership of founder Conrad Beissel.  The site includes many original buildings.

1719 Hans Herr House


The Hans Herr House is the oldest existing structure in Lancaster County and the oldest existing Mennonite meetinghouse in the Western Hemisphere.  The complex includes the house, a blacksmith shop, farming museum, and visitors center.

President James Buchanan's Wheatland

Berks County Heritage Area

The Berks County Heritage Center is a complex devoted to local history.  It houses the restored Gruber Wagon Works, the C. Hiester Canal Center, a historic cover bridge, and several monuments.  It is located along the Union Canal Towpath Trail, a historic corridor that connects several recreation and historic areas.

Christiana Underground Railroad Center at Historic Zercher’s Hotel

The Christiana Resistance was one of the first challenges to the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.  The historic Zercher's Hotel dates to the time of the event, which took place a few miles away.  There is a monument outside and a small museum inside that commemorate the Resistence

Allegheny Aqueduct Historical Park

The Allegheny Aqueduct is a park containing an aqueduct that formerly carried the Schuykill Canal across the Allegheny Creek.  The aqueduct was constructed in 1824.  The Beidler House, built in 1783, is located in the park and is open for special events.

Conrad Weiser Homestead

The Conrad Weiser Homestead is a historic site and park dedicated to early American pioneer and diplomat Conrad Weiser.  Weiser is buried on the grounds.  The museum maintains irregular hours (as of April 2012), so call ahead or check their website.

Robert Fulton Birthplace

The birthplace of inventor Robert Fulton is commemorated at this historic site in southern Lancaster County.  Fulton is credited with devising the first commercially successful steamboat, as well as the first practical submarine.
