Longwood Gardens

Although known primarily as one of the premire public gardens in the United States, Longwood's buildings are also very historic.  For example, the oldest section of the Peirce-du Pont House dates from 1730.

Fonthill Castle

Fonthill Castle was built by eccentric Henry Mercer, founder of both the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works and the Mercer Museum, as both a showcase for tile for his works and as his residence.  Fonthill was built out of poured concrete and it's 44 rooms are connected via a warren of stairways and passages.  .

Hampton National Historic Site

Hampton National Historic Site is the site of a preserved mansion, built in 1790, and other associated farm buildings located in Towson, MD.  The site interpretes the life of the Ridgely family, as well as those slaves, sharecroppers, and others who worked the site through its history.

Pennsbury Manor

Pennsbury Manor is the recreated home of the founder of Pennsylvania, William Penn.  The plantation was rebuilt in the 1930s at the site of the original structures.  In addition to the main house, a museum, gardens and other outbuildings comprise the site.

Eisenhower National Historic Site

Eisenhower National Historic Site is the retirement home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.  The property contains the only home the Eisenhower's ever owned, as well as an adjacent farm where Eisenhower raised award winning cattle.

Seminary Ridge Museum

The Seminary Ridge Museum is a new museum that recently opened up in Schmucker Hall, the former main building of the Lutheran Theological Seminary Gettysburg.  The Museum tells the story of the first day of the Battle and the treatment of the wounded at Schmucker Hall.

Winterthur is a country estate and museum located in northern Delaware.  It is devoted to early American decorative arts and culture.  The museum includes an estate, galleries, gardens, and rotating exhibit space.  The University of Delaware offers a graduate program at Winterthur as well.

Hagley Museum and Library

The Hagley Museum and Library is the site of the first DuPont family enterprise, a historic gunpowder works.  Over 200 acres of land along the Brandywine River are open for exploration.  Highlights include the gunpowder mills and Eleutherian Mills, the home of I.E. duPont.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State was the world's first true penitentiary when it opened in 1829.  It was closed in 1971 and largely left to decay in the middle of Philadelphia.  It is preserved today as a stabilized ruin that can be visited and explored.

Old Jail Museum

The Old Jail Museum is housed in the former Carbon County Prison in Jim Thorpe.  It is most famous as the location of the "handprint on the wall" legend and the hanging of several accused Molly Maguires.
